why did you decide to use gocco?
"We had been talking about starting a line of letterpress goods for a long time, but accessing a press was a major obstacle: we didn't have room to buy our own and renting time in a studio was a hassle. Gocco was the perfect answer since it allowed us to print in a similar style from our home studio."
what do you love about gocco?
"We love that it doesn't take up a lot of space, and we definitely love the instant-gratification factor. As long as you have supplies on hand, you can go from idea to finished product in a couple hours! It allows for a lot of flexibility and creativity."
how do you feel about the death of gocco? Do you see any parallel to Polaroid film?
"We're very sad about the death of gocco, and kind of in denial--we just refuse believe the end is near! There definitely are similarities to the end of Polaroid, but whereas Polaroid has taken a big hit due to the rise of digital photography, gocco has experienced quite a growth spurt in the U.S. in the last few years. It's a shame to nip that in the bud."
are you finding hacks or just using other print methods?
"We still have plenty of supplies, so we haven't had to resort to drastic measures yet. But we have been bookmarking gocco hacks online, and are considering returning to our original letterpress plan, as well as traditional screen printing."
are you squirreling away your dwindling gocco supplies?
"Yes, we have been stockpiling supplies as much as we are able! Due to our denial about the situation, unfortunately we didn't start doing this until prices had already gone up quite a bit."
have you seen an increase in demand for gocco prints now that they've discontinued the product?
"We haven't really noticed an increase in demand for gocco prints since the discontinuation. It seems there are enough gocco artists out there with enough supplies at the moment that gocco work hasn't become a rarity just yet. Also, customers who aren't as involved in the art/design/craft scene may not know what gocco is or that it is endangered!"
